About Eastern Washington University

Eastern Washington University is a public comprehensive state university, with the main campus in Cheney, located in Spokane County, WA, city which was officially incorporated on November 28, 1883, named after Benjamin Pierce Cheney, who was a Boston railroad tycoon. According to the Census Bureau, in 2008, Cheney was home to more than 10 000 full-time residents. Due to the fact that it is home of the Eastern Washington University, its population grows to nearly 20 000, when the classes from the university are in session.

EWU was established in 1882, thanks to Benjamin Pierce Cheney, who granted $10 000 for the university's founding, first starting as Benjamin P. Cheney Academy, in honor of its founder. It officially became Eastern Washington University in 1977, its name being changed by the Washington state legislature.

Since its founding, EWU grew in both size and popularity, having today an enrollment estimated at a number of nearly 14 000 students (2008). Eastern offers its students more than 100 fields of study, including 10 master’s degrees, 4 graduate certificates, more than 50 graduate programs of study, as well as an applied doctoral program of physical therapy. EWU is known to be the only university in the country to have a state crime lab, including digital state archives building located on its campus.

The athletic teams at Eastern, are known as the Eastern Washington Eagles, having the ‘’ Swoop’’ Eagle as their mascot and competing in the Big Sky Conference at the NCAA Division I (I - FCS for football) level. The Eastern most favorite sports have always been football and basketball, but the athletic teams from EWU also participate, among other, in the American Collegiate Hockey Association, Division II, Western Region, in hockey, as well as in NIRSA NCCSL, in men’s soccer, in which sport the Eagles are 2007 Region VI Champions.
